Sanyo PLV Z3000/Z700

Z700 Z3000

The new PLV-Z3000 is the jewel in the crown of the Full High Definition home cinema range. The Projector's 120 Hz technology facilitates extremely clear and detailed image representation, in particular for fast and animated scenes. With a contrast ratio of 65000:1 home cinema enthusiasts can now watch darker sequences in better quality as well - while at the same time benefiting from an extremely low fan noise of only 19 decibels.

The PLV-Z3000 impresses the user with a novel technology, which reduces unwelcome image deterioration due to artefacts in scenes containing fast movements. The Dynamic Predictive Frame Interpolation Technology calculates intermediate images from the original images and thus achieves 120 images per second instead of the actual 60. This 5:5 pull-down mode makes action scenes in films or sports broadcasts appear significantly more natural and clearer on the projection screen.

Offering a full 1920 x 1080 high-definition resolution, the PLV-Z700 delivers rich, deep and accurate colors due to SANYO's exclusive Topaz Real HD Technology, a 3D color management system that addresses changes in color phase and color level to obtain perfect color reproduction.

The PLV-Z700's color management system provides 1110 times more color combinations than SANYO's 720p PLV-Z5, a total of approximately 216 billion possible color combinations. This new color management system was designed to optimize the potential of deep color via the projector's two HDMI 1.3 inputs.

Z3000

Sanyo PLV Z3000

Z3000 - A 10-bit driver can control 1.1 billion colors, the new Sanyo 14bit Gamma 3D CC/12-bit driver boosts performance by 64 times (of 10 bit models like the HW10 also) to 68.7 billion colors. Gradation levels jump from a possible 1,024 to 4,096.

DON'T GET TOO CARRIED AWAY WITH CR SPECIFICATIONS!

BLACK TEST!! (From CR Review)

The projector that produced the darker 4 bars (image below, on the left) must be better than the one that produced the lighter 3 gray bars on the right, don't you agree?

From HCC

In the above image the 7 gray bars are the same.

No, the 7 bars are the same.

The only difference is how YOU perceived the brightness. That's what we mean by "Real World" we don't get carried away with specifications that just add zeros onto readings. They often have little relationship to what and how people watch and the conditions encountered in the Real World. -- |more|

Other features & comments:

The Sanyo models have a dust door which helps keep dust out of the lens when not in use. The Sanyo larger lens shift and zoom allow more flexible installation. The Sanyo Z3000 costs more but offers more performance including 120Hz LCD Panel frame rate. The Epson TW2000 is well and truly in this race along with the new Sanyo Z700.

The Sony HW10 is a great performer but not suited to a room with mid/high ambient light.

Colour processor: Sony explain it like this "(HW10 can..) create and display 64 times the level of color expression of 8-bit projectors" using the same logic a 12 bit model (i.e. Z3000/TW4000) is a 64 x step up again.

The HW10 can produce 100-inch / 2.5m screen from 3.3 to 4.8m. The Sanyo Z700/Z3000 100 inch is range 3.1 to 5.9m. Lens shift is far more accommodating in the Sanyo models making placement almost anywhere in the room (within reason) possible.

Feeling Lucky?
" Are you feeling lucky.. ?"

Bottom Line

All current 1080 projectors are bright enough for a light controlled (dedicated cinema) room. Look at the specifications but don't dwell on them too much, as we've said the current crop of true HD projectors are all good so you start to look at features or warranty and value.

The down side for the Sony HW10:

  • Warranty
You could pay more to upgrade warranty but that will not include the lamp as it's considered a consumable! Finding actual warranty conditions (especially for lamps) is not easy as you'll see below.
".. The third party warranty provider said the projection lamp was considered a "consumable" by Sony and would not be covered under the extended service plan. I explained SONY covered the lamp for a period of one year so SONY did not consider it a "consumable" and the additional point that Sony said the ESP extended my ORIGINAL Sony warranty. They said I was out of luck per warranty small print. DON'T BUY SONY...DON'T BUY THEIR EXTENDED WARRANTY!.." |Link|
  • Features
Upgrade the warranty on the HW10 and you're not far from the price of a model that has the latest 120Hz LCD (which is better for sports) you'll also score a 12bit colour processor which controls 64 times the colours of the HW10. More lamp power which is handy if you can't always control the light.
  • Value
For less you could purchase a Sanyo PLV Z 700 which in most areas has better specifications. It has a far better warranty which includes the lamp.

We mention Warranty (=value) because It's easy to spend 2k on repairs, not to mention a bad run on lamps within 3 years if you're unlucky. We've had to deal with upset clients that thought they would not be paying so much more $$$ within a short time in spite of our warnings (Examples on file).

People quote this or that review and harp on some technicality, we've listed facts along with our opinion.

Confirm what we say with your own research. Don't believe everything you read on forums either seemingly knowledgeable people can be wrong. We sell all the projectors mentioned here so we really don't care what you buy (but we hope it's from us!!) we hope you remember what we recommenced. To spell out an example there is no use complaining to us about the Panasonic warranty when we told you all about it.

There is no such thing as a bad HD projector.
There are lamps that blow.
There are components that fail.
There are good and bad warranties.
The key is value vs. performance at your place.
