Review - Overall Rating ( **** 4 out of four )

".. I now pronounce me man and projector. I know, I know, I've said it before - SANYO projectors are great. Loyal Big Picture Big Sound readers will recall fondly my rave review of SANYO's PLV-Z5 LCD Home Theater Projector . It received our coveted four-star rating. Of course, the Z5's native resolution is 720p, so deep-down there was a voice saying, "Wait, just wait. There will be a SANYO 1080p projector soon."

"..the answer is easy. The Z2000 rules.."

ALMOST SOLD OUT!!!

We've just got our FINAL shipment of the award winning Sanyo PLV-Z5 HD projector.

While it's not as good as the Z2000 it's not far off especially from 3M or more back and you'll save a fortune.

  • Conclusion (review)

Not many projectors warrant a rating of five stars across the board.

Even on high quality performers we can usually find some flaw or design limitation that causes us to knock down the rating in one or more categories. However, there is no justification for rating the PLV-Z5 any less than the full five stars. .. the buyer gets an extensive feature set, stellar image performance, and one of the best values in home theater projectors we've ever seen.

SANYO
Z5

  • If you have a dedicated room this is the pick of the crop.
  • "..Not because of the specifications. Not because the previous model was universally praised, not even because the image is almost perfect. We won't even mention the Z5's anti-dust features.."

The PLV-Z2000 is outfitted with the industry's most advanced lens shifting function. When coupled with the projector's short throw capability and 2x zoom, the PLV-Z2000 can create a large screen image in any size room and from virtually any location. The lens shifting function allows wide-range shifting up or down to three screen sizes and left to right to two screen sizes. The throw design of the PLV-Z2000, is capable of projecting a 100-inch diagonal image from 10 to 20 feet away, which makes it extremely suitable for small to mid-size home theaters.

Projectors generate a tremendous amount of heat and requires a high quality fan to protect them. At this level of brightness, the fan is 'on' most of the time and the noise can be extremely loud and disruptive, especially in smaller home theaters where the projector and the audience are in the same vicinity. To promote greater enjoyment of the film and to reduce noise levels during quiet passages of a film, the PLV-Z2000 is equipped with the industry's quietest fan, a large aperture, low noise Sirocco cooling fan that never rises above 19dB in the economy mode.

Nios II embedded processor enables SANYO's home theater projector to deliver rich, deep, and accurate color resolution, great contrast, and a smooth film-like picture, as well as seven pre-set calibrations for various types of dark room and ambient light viewing.

SANYO's PLV-Z2000 provides home theater enthusiasts a unique entertainment experience in a feature-rich full high-definition home projector.

Contrast Ratio Wars!

Epson TW2000 claims 50,000:1 Contrast ratio often leave out "up to" and don't make a big deal that the real contrast (native) is 4,000:1 so higher is in "Dynamic" mode which is not great for cinema! |more| (Too cartoon like) So go for the projector with the highest CLAIMED Contrast Ratio or get one with 64 times the number of colours that’s almost a grand cheaper, made in Japan and quieter. The Epson TW2000 is a great projector but how much $$$ more should you pay?

3LCD= No spinning colour wheel.

Unlike a single chip DLP projector there is no high speed colour wheel to worry about |more|

SANYO WILL NOT REPAIR IMPORTS OR "GRAY MARKET" PROJECTORS.

21 December 2007

To: AIM Digital Imaging

Dear Steve,

RE: Parallel imports of Sanyo LCD Projectors including PLV Z2000.

Thank you for your inquiry on this matter.

Sanyo Oceania's policy is to only provide warranty protection for Sanyo projectors purchased through authorised dealers (as listed on our website).

This policy has been established to ensure that our customers will enjoy the on-going benefits of dealing with well established businesses that have the necessary expertise to support all aspects of the purchase experience.

Ranging from a high level of professionalism obtained from the depth and breadth of knowledge and initial information provided, to a comprehensive after sales service back up in the event this should be required.

We believe that our customer's best interests must be protected, and it is only by supporting businesses that have demonstrated the ability and willingness to maintain the necessary processes and procedures can this be achieved.

For this reason we will actively avoid supporting importers who are not able to meet the minimum standards Sanyo Oceania and our customers expect.

Yours faithfully,

In the case of the Z2000 most Grey Market imports start with "LP-Z" and are also marked 110 volts. -- AIM

WARNING Some Gray Market sellers are telling fibs about the warranty they offer!

We buy in bulk so a lower price has almost always turned out to be "Gray Market" = No 3 year Lamp/Projector warranty!

" I am keen to confirm that Projector Point are not a local approved Sanyo reseller."

" PLV Z2000 stock promoted by Projector Point is not imported by Sanyo Oceania and is not covered by local warranty, and certainly does not receive our special 3 year coverage for both the projector and the lamp."

"As we state on our website, our 3 year warranty offer is strictly limited to projectors sold within Australia and New Zealand by our approved resellers and must have a genuine third year extended warranty card supplied with the projector to qualify.”

I hope that this clarifies the issue.

Do you really need 1080 HD?

That depends on how far back you intend to sit! If you're right on top of a TV then why not, but from say 5-6m back from a projected image the difference would not be great between a 720p (Still HD) and 1080p HD Max..

See for yourself the following 2 images simulate 720 & 1080 sitting at your PC it's easy to see the difference but try 3m back :)

For illustration only, not to scale.

If you want to save money and still have fantastic HD consider the Sanyo PLV-Z5

PLV Z2000 supports 24 frames per second.

However while it can receive “inputs” (i.e. the source material) at 24fps,  it does not “output” at 24fps – that is, it does not project the image on to the screen at this speed.

The reason for this is that 24 fps (effectively 24Hz) would result in a very perceivable flicker in the image: even cinema projectors do not actually show the image at 24 fps, instead showing each frame twice so that the screen is actually refreshed at 48fps.

The Z2000 will do a similar process to show the image at a faster refresh rate.

  • So, in response to the question of supporting “true” 24fps mode, we can say that the Z2000 is absolutely compatible with 24fps sources, and will convert this to a faster ‘flicker-free' rate for display. This actual frame rate is dependant on the mains power frequency in hertz, our understanding is that for Australia (being 50Hz) the rate is about 48 hertz to avoid flicker. Note that mains voltage and frequency does vary and 240volt/50Hz is just the average.
