First of all there isn't an ink jet printer that doesn't suffer from blocked heads now and then, that's why they have ink collection sponges inside them to collect the ink you waste every time you choose to clean the print heads. Your printer spends your money every time you turn it on by doing a small head flush. When you think about it you'd expect ink in the heads to dry up if you don't use the printer. If you look around the forums you see quotes like: (Epson Pro-Graphics) " ..If like me, you only print about once a week, you end up having more ink go down the drain for cleaning cycles and the auto thing it does than what goes on paper. Anytime its been a few days, or after a fairly big print job, it will automatically do a little flush, which could be anywhere from 5 to 10ml of ink. If you turn your printer on on like twice a week, it will do this each time, and if you only print like 5 or 10 8x10, then the equivalent amount of ink that goes on paper will go into the waste tank. Of course if you print alot more, then you get much more out of the printer before it does another flush, but this printer sure does suck ink. " ".. Its not so bad when you look at how much ink is used per print job, roughly 1 to 1.5ml per 8x10, but its all the ink inbetween that is used up. And careful, you printer may start clogging up entire channels, which will require a power clean, and that's 100ml in one shot. This could also happen if you accidentally hit yes when the printer asks every now and then if you'd like to do a power clean. Just make sure to hit the correct arrow cause once it starts, there is no going back!.." "..Oh.. as you can tell, I am just a little bitter. The printer does print great, but it does clog, and it does waste alot of ink.." "..what you don't know is that turning on the printer after a few days, even leaving it on idle for a few days and sending it a print job, or after doing lots of print jobs in a row, the printer will first do a little purge all by itself without you even knowing, or without you being able to stop it. Try it yourself. As the last thing you do one day, print out a nozzle check to see how much ink has gone through. Leave the printer for a couple of days. Then send it one print job, something even tiny, and you'll see that the new number will be well above 5ml. Heck, if after turning it on you hear it doing its thing, you don't even need to send a print job. Just do a nozzle check and you'll see that at least 5ml is used up.." "..I called Epson. There is nothing you can do. In fact, if you only print one or 2 8x10s per week at about 1ml each, you will used more ink to turn the thing on then what goes onto the paper. So its best to really limit how often you use it if you don't use it all that much cause that 5ml will be wasted every few days.." ".. if I know its been a few days since I used it, I think, do I really need to turn it on and waste 5ml to print a couple of pictures? I've hardly ever printed more in a row that would use more ink than the 5ml flush. That would be like 5 8x10's, and I don't usually print that many in a row unless I"m printing out headshots for myself stuff. Don't get me wrong, I like having the printer around knowing that I can print when I need to, but given its ink wasting tendincies, I try and not use it unless necessary.."
".I used an Epson 7600 for some years and kept a record of ink usage. The printer has a facility for providing this. I found that I averaged 1ml of ink per A4 sheet. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less, but I did all my costing using this as my ink costs. A4 is about equal to an 8 x 10. I would imagine that your 4800 would have similar ink usage to the 7600." And another point of view.. From: Fotoxxx [mailto:xx@xx.com.au] . Tips on saving ink with a Epson Pro-Graphics 4800 - 7800 . Regarding this little article on your website. Are you guys for real putting something like this on your site? I would have thought AIM's expertise would take in consideration what these printers are actually designed for - PRO GRAPHICS Business People - not part-time users... . If you purchase a pro-graphics printer with the intention of only doing 2-3 8x10" prints, why bother buying this printer in the first place? . This is a production machine and you would naturally use it to print and sell your PHOTO's - people who should buy these printers are selling their images not paper and ink... . An example - . I print 16x20" wedding photos on my Epson 7800 and sell these for $95.00 each! There is more than enough margin built into this price to take into consideration any waste - most intelligent business people would build all the associated costs into their final sale price. If you fail to do this you will most likely find yourself out of business fairly soon. . I would remove this article from your site as it only makes you look a little silly advocating such a ridiculous notion that a pro-graphics printer should be tip-toed around because of head cleaning - I paid $6000 for my printer and it has paid itself more than 30 times over in the first 12 months! with an average profit of 75% - you do the math! . I only do this as a part-time job! I suggest you tell this guy to sell his printer and buy a cheap A3 printer with a continuous bulk ink system - cheap mentality = cheap customers . Regards, Ivy . Q. What is the difference between a printer and a Plotter? A. Plotters use moving pens, great for plans but so-so for graphics/photos.
