In general, there are three types of inkjet photo paper available for your printer:
Resin Coated, Nanoporous and Cast-Coated. The way the paper is made determines its performance characteristics.

The diagrams below show a cross section of the three different papers and underneath we explain what the differences are between them.

RESIN COATED PAPER

il

The Galerie Classic Pearl is a resin coated roll paper and has the advantages that this product type offers.

PLUSES:

  • Your images will last because the paper has good light stability.
  • As the resin coated base is the same as that used for traditional photographs
it gives your images a real "photographic feel".
  • The base of your images won't ripple if they get wet, like normal plain paper,
as it has a resin coated base.
  • The paper is resistant to tears and kinks.
  • Your images will keep their glossy appearance for longer due to the fact that the ink is absorbed by the polymer layer and not the paper base.
  • Your images will be protected against abrasion because of its transparent polymer layer.

MINUSES:

  • You may need to alter your printer settings to a slower mode as the layer absorbs the ink more slowly (please refer to your instruction sheet for printer settings).
  • The top layer is not entirely water resistant and the degrees of waterfastness may vary from brand to brand.

NANOPOROUS (nanoceramic) PAPER

n

ILFORD Galerie Smooth Gloss and Smooth Pearl are both nanoporous or microceramic medias.

PLUSES:

  • Instant dry
  • Often called nanoporous, nanoceramic or microceramic technology
  • "Out of the box" product.
  • Can be handled immediately after printing.
  • High degree of water fastness.
  • High speed printing modes can be used.
  • Heavier base weight gives it the feel of a real photograph.
  • If displayed in a frame or laminated, the prints will last as long as resin
    coated paper.

MINUSES:

  • All nanoporous media suffers from "gas fading" to a certain degree.

CAST-COATED PAPER

il

PLUSES:

Your prints will dry quickly as the ink is absorbed into the paper base.
You can use the paper on a wide range of printers due to the minimal interaction between the ink and the receiving layer.

Even large particles (ie the pigment used to make black ink) will be absorbed into the paper.

MINUSES:

Your prints will not last as long due to poor light stability.
Your prints will not feel like real photographs due to the paper base.
If you use a lot of ink in one given area to create your image ie. a black
background the backside of the paper will ripple.

Your prints will loose their glossy look quicker because the ink is absorbed
directly into the paper pulp.
The paper is not tear-resistant and is prone to kinks.

RESIN COATED PAPER A thick photo paper feel.

  • The weight of the paper is a good indicator ie over 230gsm.
If you gently bend the corner of the paper it won't leave a mark.
  • A drop of water on an unprinted sheet will not immediately be absorbed into the paper but will slowly disappear. Once dry, the paper will maintain its original appearance with no ripples.

NANOPOROUS PAPER

  • The surface tends to feel slightly "sticky" to touch.
  • If you gently bend the corner you can hear a slight "cracking" sound.
  • The surface tends to "squeak" when you touch it!

CAST-COATED PAPER

  • It looks and feels more like a light-weight postcard.
  • The surface can be scratched with a finger nail.
  • A drop of water on an unprinted sheet will immediately be absorbed and the
paper will bulge. Once dry, it will stay deformed like plain paper.

Tips on saving ink with a Epson Pro-Graphics 4800 - 7800

Cheap Ink prices?

First of all there isn't an ink jet printer that doesn't suffer from blocked heads now and then, that's why they have ink collection sponges inside them to collect the ink you waste every time you choose to clean the print heads.

Your printer spends your money every time you turn it on by doing a small head flush. When you think about it you'd expect ink in the heads to dry up if you don't use the printer.

Canon 5100 base showing ink grave yard..
Canon example

If you look around the forums you see quotes like: (Epson Pro-Graphics)

" ..If like me, you only print about once a week, you end up having more ink go down the drain for cleaning cycles and the auto thing it does than what goes on paper. Anytime its been a few days, or after a fairly big print job, it will automatically do a little flush, which could be anywhere from 5 to 10ml of ink. If you turn your printer on on like twice a week, it will do this each time, and if you only print like 5 or 10 8x10, then the equivalent amount of ink that goes on paper will go into the waste tank. Of course if you print alot more, then you get much more out of the printer before it does another flush, but this printer sure does suck ink. "

".. Its not so bad when you look at how much ink is used per print job, roughly 1 to 1.5ml per 8x10, but its all the ink inbetween that is used up. And careful, you printer may start clogging up entire channels, which will require a power clean, and that's 100ml in one shot. This could also happen if you accidentally hit yes when the printer asks every now and then if you'd like to do a power clean. Just make sure to hit the correct arrow cause once it starts, there is no going back!.."

"..Oh.. as you can tell, I am just a little bitter. The printer does print great, but it does clog, and it does waste alot of ink.."

"..what you don't know is that turning on the printer after a few days, even leaving it on idle for a few days and sending it a print job, or after doing lots of print jobs in a row, the printer will first do a little purge all by itself without you even knowing, or without you being able to stop it. Try it yourself. As the last thing you do one day, print out a nozzle check to see how much ink has gone through. Leave the printer for a couple of days. Then send it one print job, something even tiny, and you'll see that the new number will be well above 5ml. Heck, if after turning it on you hear it doing its thing, you don't even need to send a print job. Just do a nozzle check and you'll see that at least 5ml is used up.."

"..I called Epson. There is nothing you can do. In fact, if you only print one or 2 8x10s per week at about 1ml each, you will used more ink to turn the thing on then what goes onto the paper. So its best to really limit how often you use it if you don't use it all that much cause that 5ml will be wasted every few days.."

".. if I know its been a few days since I used it, I think, do I really need to turn it on and waste 5ml to print a couple of pictures? I've hardly ever printed more in a row that would use more ink than the 5ml flush. That would be like 5 8x10's, and I don't usually print that many in a row unless I"m printing out headshots for myself stuff. Don't get me wrong, I like having the printer around knowing that I can print when I need to, but given its ink wasting tendincies, I try and not use it unless necessary.."

Points to note from Pro-Graphic experience.

  • If possible never do a power clean as that's equal to about 1/2 cartridge of ink!
  • Print as many jobs as you can in one batch
  • Don't turn the printer off every night
  • How much ink do you really use? See below:

".I used an Epson 7600 for some years and kept a record of ink usage. The printer has a facility for providing this. I found that I averaged 1ml of ink per A4 sheet. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less, but I did all my costing using this as my ink costs. A4 is about equal to an 8 x 10. I would imagine that your 4800 would have similar ink usage to the 7600."

And another point of view..

Tips on saving ink with a Epson Pro-Graphics 4800 - 7800

.

Regarding this little article on your website. Are you guys for real putting something like this on your site? I would have thought AIM's expertise would take in consideration what these printers are actually designed for - PRO GRAPHICS Business People - not part-time users...

.

If you purchase a pro-graphics printer with the intention of only doing 2-3 8x10" prints, why bother buying this printer in the first place?

.

This is a production machine and you would naturally use it to print and sell your PHOTO's - people who should buy these printers are selling their images not paper and ink...

.

An example -

.

I print 16x20" wedding photos on my Epson 7800 and sell these for $95.00 each! There is more than enough margin built into this price to take into consideration any waste - most intelligent business people would build all the associated costs into their final sale price.

If you fail to do this you will most likely find yourself out of business fairly soon.

.

I would remove this article from your site as it only makes you look a little silly advocating such a ridiculous notion that a pro-graphics printer should be tip-toed around because of head cleaning - I paid $6000 for my printer and it has paid itself more than 30 times over in the first 12 months! with an average profit of 75% - you do the math!

.

I only do this as a part-time job!

I suggest you tell this guy to sell his printer and buy a cheap A3 printer with a continuous bulk ink system - cheap mentality = cheap customers

.

Regards,

Ivy

Did you know?

Q. What is the difference between a printer and a Plotter?

A. Plotters use moving pens, great for plans but so-so for graphics/photos.

  • Printers use multi-nozzle print heads (normally ink jet, sometimes thermal) that can print true photo graphic quality.
  • Plotters in many cases have been replaced by large-format inkjet printers.
Large format printers are often known as plotters, even though they are not technically plotters.

.
