One trap is purchasing a cheap printer that costs just almost as much to replace the cartridges as it did to purchase the printer |review| so a "cheap" printer may be more expensive in the long run plus you've put up with sub standard performance. Some printers while more expensive to buy are actually cheaper if you consider the amount of ink they come with and you're getting a much faster & better model too.

Some people buy a printer with a CIS system, this feeds ink to the printer from bottles which is much cheaper than buying cartridges. We recommend this system for high volume users such as photographers, schools etc. (many love the systems, see reviews on CIS pages). You can expect great results without having to waste ink that's un-usable in the bottom of cartridges, as there are no sponges in the latest CIS systems, there are no air bubbles to ruin prints either.

Most high volume professional systems (like this EPSON 3800) use CIS but instead of bottles they have large cartridges attached to the ink tubes.
